Helping Your Overweight Kids
The obesity epidemic in America isn't just affecting adults; more and more children are struggling with their weight as well. How can parents help kids lose weight and develop healthier eating and exercise habits? Experts suggest that the key is to implement small changes.
5 Ways to Help Your Kids Get Healthy
- Make it a family project. It's much easier for children to learn about making healthy food choices if they consistently see their parents making good choices.
- Avoid labeling foods as "bad" or "forbidden."An occasional piece of cake or slice of pizza at a birthday party can be fine, especially if most of the meals eaten at home are nutritionally balanced.
- Keep junk food out of the house. You may not be able to control the eating that occurs at school or other places outside of your home, but you can make a point of keeping your kitchen free of temptation.
- Get children involved in cooking. Children of all ages can participate in food preparation on some level, and it may make it easier for them to try out new foods.
- Offer healthy drinks.Make water, low-fat milk, and fresh juices available and avoid bringing sodas home.
With children, the overwhelming message should be one of health instead of weight loss. Encourage positive self-esteem and body image regardless of size and focus on creating habits that will lead to a lifetime of better health and weight control.
