Painless Ways to Cut 500 Calories from Your Diet

In order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. For example, to lose one pound of weight, you need to use 3500 calories more than you consume. That means that if you want to lose one pound a week, you should focus on either burning 500 calories a day with exercise, or cutting 500 calories from your daily diet.

Five Ways to Cut 500 Calories from Your Diet

  1. Cut out the soda. Each 8-ounce serving of regular soda contains at least 100 calories. If you normally drink two or three twelve-ounce cans of soda a day, you can easily eliminate 500 calories by getting rid of soda.
  2. Eat a healthier salad. Although many dieters rely on salads to help them with their weight loss, many of the popular salad add-ons end up piling on the calories. Replace fatty salad dressings with fat-free dressing or vinaigrettes and stick to topping your bed of lettuce with low-fat cheeses and a variety of vegetables.
  3. Eat smaller portions. Practicing portion control at every single meal is one of the fastest and easiest ways to reduce the amount of calories you eat. Without even worrying about what you're eating, simply eating less of it will result in fewer calories. Take the time to eat your meal slowly and you're more likely to be satisfied with your reduced portion sizes.
  4. Fill up on healthy foods. Load half your plate with vegetables and split the remaining half between proteins and carbohydrates. Satisfying your appetite with healthy, low-calorie vegetables will make you less likely to overeat on high-calorie foods.
  5. Prepare your foods differently. Save on fat and calories by grilling, baking, or roasting your foods instead of frying. Avoid casseroles made with heavy cream sauces and stick with fresh or steamed vegetables for your side dishes.
