When trying to lose weight, you may try any cockamamie scheme that hits the late-night infomercial circuit (and goodness knows there are enough of them to keep you distracted for a while). From special formulas to food-group avoidance, weight loss supplements to herbal toxin pads, nothing seems beyond hope when you're desperate for a solution. With all that noise, it's easy to avoid the simple fix that could help you realize your long-held weight loss goals-portion control.

Portion control is the process of limiting the size and number of food servings you have with each meal. Your goal is to measure each portion of food so that you're eating one serving, rather than the mystery amount you might normally enjoy. It's a small, almost effortless way to control your eating while still enjoying food.

Portion control can help you cut thousands of calories each week.

Most of us don't realize how much food we consume in excess of recommended serving sizes. When you exercise portion control, you don't have to worry about that.

In order to begin getting a feel for how much you can eat, some tools can be helpful.

Measuring cups and a food scale are the perfect helpers when it comes to adjusting to your new weight loss lifestyle. Use these tools to begin getting an idea of what the portions are that you should be eating. If you aren't sure how to approach this, talk to your weight loss center staff. They will have some good, specific guidelines that you can follow. After a while you will be able to get a good visual down and then you won't need the tools anymore to help you measure.  Once you have a good understanding of how your new eating habits are going to fit in with your new lifestyle, it will all begin to feel more natural.
